Overview --> Trans-Sahara expedition, 2001 Trans-Sahara expedition 2001 Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia Prepare2go was asked to provide three 18 year olds with the adventure of a lifetime, to celebrate leaving school before heading for university. After their requests for bungee-jumping in New Zealand had been refused (!), the final plan agreed on was a South-North crossing of the Sahara. With one Land Rover and guide, the expedition took 6 weeks to cover the route - during which the young men had to learn budgets, navigation and desert driving, teamwork under stress, desert living and also experience a little of the life of others less fortunate than ourselves. They were allowed to make mistakes until the last moment before calamity, sometimes testing the guide's heart rate a little, but the best way to learn and gain confidence. The final 500kms of piste were successfully done without guide input, they learnt to choose diesel before Coke, and asked for extra time in southern Algeria instead of on the beaches of Tunisia. It will be some years before the full realisation of what they achieved sinks in!
