Overview --> Aconcagua 2000, Chile, Argentina

Aconcagua 2000, Chile, Argentina

Aconcagua is climbed by large numbers of climbers in the summer (Dec-Feb), but nobody tries it in winter - and certainly not to telemark it! We set off to summit this Andean mountain (one of the seven summits, and the highest mountain in the world outside the Himalaya) in the winter of 2000. Each climber had a backpack of 35kgs, and a pulk (towed sled) with a further 50kgs (normally there are mules to carry the equipment into base camp - but not in winter!).

The walk in from the road head normally takes 2 days, we took 9. With horrendous weather, deep snow and very strong winds, chances of making it even out of base camp (if we got there!) seemed slim. Once in base camp, though, fortunes turned and we found ourselves with a short weather window to try for the summit. On the 2 October, we successfully summitted the mountain - the only successful ascent in the winter of 2000.
